How to avoid getting scammed
So, how do you avoid getting scammed? Well, firstly don’t trust anyone online, if you haven’t spoken to them or met them in person. Another option is to ring or message this known person on another platform. This way, if someone you know is giving away $500 you can call them and see if they’ve been hacked or not. Therefore, you need to think things through before trusting anyone online.
Recently, there have been a lot of scammers who are pretending to be children. These scammers are going after parents. If you’re a parent and your children aren’t currently at home, don’t reply to a text message stating ‘hi mum’. Scammers are reaching out to mums trying to get information and hack their bank accounts. As the conversation develops, they will say they’ve lost their phone, before making a request for emergency money. Generally, they’ll say they’ve been locked out of online banking.

The above picture shows what scammer are doing. It is sad to see scammers going to these lengths. So many people are losing access to personal accounts. What would you do if a message popped up saying ‘hi mum, I got a new number you can delete the old one’? The first thing you should do is see if their number is a real valid phone number. You can check this by typing the number into google search. In that case, people who have lost money to a scam should contact their bank as soon as possible and report the matter to police.
What’s Happening with the Scammers
Police from Victoria are now taking action and have identified at least 25 victims of the ‘Hi mum’ scam. Detectives are now investigating the scam and they have found out it originates from Europe. Police cybercrime experts are warning Australians to be extra observant. This is after more than $2 million was stolen under the ‘hi mum’ phone scam.
NSW Police cybercrime squad commander, Detective Superintendent Matthew Craft, said the scam is becoming increasingly costly for parents around the world, including Australia. “Victims of the ‘Hi Mum’ scam date back to at least October last year overseas, but since May 2022, we’ve seen a substantial increase in reports not just here in NSW, but districts across Australia,” Detective Superintendent Craft said.
